How is a coach different from a therapist?
Therapists are licensed counselors who deal with psychological or emotional disorders. Coaches are trained to help people remove limiting beliefs that block them from achieving what they want to do. I am a certified coach and not a therapist, and when I encounter people who need therapy and not coaching, I refer them to someone else. My strengths lie in helping people see their strengths and then work from there. In short, I help people get out of their own way and get stuff done.
How is a coach different from a mentor?
Coaches can be mentors at times, but they will make a distinction between the two roles. Mentors are more instructive than coaches. Coaches help you find your own answers by helping you to find your focus and to strategize around that. The power in coaching lies in helping you recognize your resourceful nature, overcome fears that block you, and help you access your own answers.
My lifetime of experience in overcoming my own bad decisions combined with my PhD training and over seven years of experience allows me to be the type of coach who will help you overcome both real and perceived obstacles.
What happens in the Obstacle Blasting Session?
In this session, we get clear on how you’d like to move forward. We do not spend time in intricately detailed accounts of the problems you are facing, although a certain amount of story in moderation may occasionally be necessary. Our focus, instead, is this: What would you love?
Our focus will be on identifying what you would like to achieve and then going for that goal. If you choose to pursue coaching, you will later expand on what you’d love to do, then strategize and work towards your goals. I’ll help you along the way, helping you to stay focused, accountable, and balanced.
Where do coaching sessions happen?
Most coaching is done either over the phone or via the internet using Skype or Google Hangouts, which makes coaching very convenient. You do not lose time traveling to meet me. If you live in the Salt Lake City area, I will be happy to meet with you in a mutually agreed upon location, provided that the location is conducive to the work we need to do.
What happens after the first session?
Once we begin to meet regularly, you may find that you focus in your coaching sessions starts to shift. Coaching tends to move you forward both in ways you expected and in ways you may never have imagined. The routine, however, remains the same. We will begin each session with a brief review of how and what you have been doing. We will briefly review our notes from the prior session and decide if the focus is to remain the same or needs to be altered slightly.
You will find that you are completely safe with me and you will feel wholeheartedly supported. Part of my job as a coach is to hold you accountable. I am skilled in direct communication and I will provide you with honest, caring feedback. I have many tools and methods that I can use in helping you and I will provide them, but our focus will remain on your unique answers. These are the types of answers that tend to be effective, permanent, and very empowering.
How many sessions do I need to buy?
The minimum amount of sessions to get started is a package of 3 sessions per month. I typically work with my clients from 3 months to up to a year. You will save money by purchasing more than a month at a time. Clients tend to meet with me weekly at the beginning, then they gradually begin to meet with me every other week as they start to really take off on their goals.
Coaching work is a process and not a 60 minute quick fix. Individual sessions are therefore available for purchase only for established clients. Please review the packages I offer and also review my refund policy before choosing which package you would like. Click HERE to purchase a package.
What happens between sessions?
You will work on the goals you have listed in your previous session with me. You will have unlimited laser focus email coaching with me. You will also be encouraged to reflect on what went well in your week versus what your challenges were. When you meet with me in your next session, we will review your progress and strategize from there.
How will I know if you are the right coach for me?
You will have the chance to get a feel for what I’m all about as a coach when we meet for our Obstacle Blasting Session. You will know if you enjoyed the conversation or felt energized by it. Coaching is a very personal and it is important for you to feel good about your decision. I encourage you to sign up for my weekly newsletter. I offer insights, humor, and motivation. I am not afraid to admit by own humanity and if you read my newsletter, you’ll see that, as well. You’ll find that I am unpretentious, intuitive, insightful, and kind. I’ll also let you know about any new services I think you should know about.
What are your qualifications?
I have a PhD from the University of Minnesota, a Masters from New Mexico State University, and a Bachelors from Weber State University. I did my coaching training through the University of Texas at Dallas’ School of Management. I am an Associate Certified Coach through the International Coaching Federation. I have experience in education, training, mentoring, and coaching, and I have over seven years of experience helping clients in academic and career coaching. A few of my favorite tools are Solutions Focused Coaching, Cognitive Behavioral Coaching, and Positive Psychology.
More important than my qualifications, however, is this: I get it and I care. My central focus is on blasting through whatever’s blocking you so you can happily get stuff done.

Debra helped me to get back on track after years of feeling stuck in my writing process. I wasn’t able to commit to my ideas because I had lost confidence in my ability to know the right direction to take. Debra immediately assured me that I was going to finish. And from our first conversation, she helped me change my mindset from “if” I was going to finish my dissertation to “how” I was going to do it. Debra provided a weekly audience for my talking about my progress without the pressure of looking good in front of my adviser in school. Debra helped me to re-prioritize my intellectual life amidst a hectic family schedule. The fact that I had someone to hold me accountable for how well I stuck to my goals during the week was motivating. She even helped me to find the good in what I was accomplishing during those times when I felt unsuccessful. I would highly recommend her coaching sessions to anyone, like myself, who needs a reminder to believe in themselves again.Kim B
With Debra, I was able to identify some of the barriers and key performance issues that have been holding me back. She was incredibly skilled at asking the tough questions that helped me to reflect and view things from a different perspective, and then she held me accountable for achieving my goals. Debra is not only challenging and insightful, but also patient and understanding, with remarkable instincts and knowledge. Her coaching style was a perfect fit for me and I believe would fit others who truly desire to perform at higher levels. The skills and concepts I learned will be invaluable for the rest of my career.Gary W., MBA
